Domain Name Marketplace,
Sedo, Finalizes Top .Info Sale
July 23, 2007 - Domain name marketplace, Sedo, has revealed that they have
closed the highest .INFO sale to date, with Travel.info selling for $116,000 USD,
at a time when .COM sales are reaching record sales prices.
As the secondary domain market begins seeing higher sales values for domains
with alternate extensions to the .COM, better returns on investment can be
expected for all top-level domains (TLDs), including Sponsored TLDs, such as .MOBI
and even Country Code TLDs such as .CO.UK and .US. Other notable .INFO sales
include newspaper.info for 13,550, or roughly $18,500, booking.info for $11,500
and names.info for $8,100, or about $10,500.
Roland LaPlante, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Afilias, the
registry for .INFO domain names remarked, ''As the 6th largest TLD on the
Internet today, .INFO has become a natural place on the Internet to both place
and find information about important subjects, like travel. The record setting
sale of travel.info highlights the value of .INFO as the go-to TLD for
information and underscores its increasing prominence in the global domain
market.''
Afilias, a fully integrated global provider of registry services, maintains
international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, and offices in London, Toronto,
Philadelphia and New Delhi. Afilias provides a full range of registry services
leveraging proven technology that is fast, reliable and secure. Afilias provides
registry services support to the .ORG gTLD (under contract to Public Interest
Registry), the .INFO gTLD and several country code and sponsored TLDs including
.aero, .mobi, and .asia.
Sedo, (acronym for ''Search Engine for Domain Offers''), is an online
marketplace for buying and selling domain names and websites. Sedo began in
2001, as a student project among three friends: Tim Schumacher, Ulrich Priesner,
and Marius Wrzner. The trio distributed computer games through the website
offensiv.de. After the business was phased out, the students considered selling
it, which laid the foundation for Sedo: ''search engine for domain offers.''
Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., Sedo has assembled what it believes is the
world's largest database of domain names for sale, with more than four million
listings. Buyers and sellers are brought together through a searchable online
marketplace, and conduct negotiations anonymously using an offer-counteroffer
system. To facilitate successful transactions, Sedo has introduced a range of
related services, including domain name escrow/transfer services, domain name
appraisals, a domain brokerage service and paid domain name parking. Sedo's
model has attracted a global membership base of more than 355,000 domain
professionals, and more than 7 million listings. Sedo offers regional versions
of its site for the UK (Sedo.co.uk), France (Sedo.fr), Germany (Sedo.de), and
Spain (eSedo.com).
